About this book
The African American Fill-In Puzzles by Imani Oliver is a large print fill-in puzzle book celebrating African American heritage across 100 themed puzzles and 2,000 words: Black Soul Heritage, family and community, HBCUs, Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, the church, the barbershop, food, music and history. A fill-in is a crossword without clues: you get a list of words sorted by letter count and an empty interlocking grid, and you work out where each one fits. Every page opens with a fact, like Opal Lee walking from Texas to Washington at 89 to make Juneteenth a federal holiday, so you learn while you solve. Printed in large type on 8.5 × 11 inch pages with the solutions in the back, it is the harder sister of the African American Word Search, rated 4.9 out of 5 by its first 38 reviewers. $14.99 at imanioliver.com, and for Early Black Friday: buy 4 books, get 2 free, with free shipping on 3 or more and a 60-day free replacement promise.

A fact you'll actually remember, 100 times over
Every puzzle opens with one short, surprising fact about a name or a word in the grid. Customers tell me they end up googling the ones they don't know and reading for an hour. That's the point.
Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” walked 1,400 miles from Texas to D.C. at age 89. Her efforts helped make Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021.

Made for eyes that have earned a rest
Big, bold letters on 8.5 × 11 inch pages. No squinting, no magnifier, no pinching a phone screen. The book lies open flat on a table or a lap, and the solutions in the back are large print too.

“These puzzle books are EVERYTHING! My family LOVED the books in their gift bags at my family reunion!” That is LaTonya, one of the first buyers of this book, and she is not alone: gifts are the most-mentioned reason to buy across the collection. This Black Friday the set does the math for you.
Mentions in verified reviews across the collection, October 2026.
I made the puzzle book I couldn't find for my own family
My grandfather lived through the Civil Rights Movement and talked about the Harlem Renaissance the way other grandparents talk about the weather. When I went looking for a puzzle book that felt like his stories, all I found were generic books with small print and words like “banana.”
So I made this one. Every word in it comes from African American life: the kitchen, the church, the campus, the movement. Every fact was researched by me. The grids are a step harder than my word searches, because customers asked for a challenge, and the print is still big because the people I made it for have earned the right not to squint.
If your book ever arrives damaged, or you find a mistake I missed, write to me and I will send a replacement free within 60 days. That is not a policy, it is a promise from one person to another.

Gift bags at the family reunion
These puzzle books are EVERYTHING! My family LOVED the books in their gift bags at my family reunion! Keep creating these priceless jewels about our history as the attempts to erase our rich history continues!
A notch above
I love puzzles, but this is a notch above, to learn Black history as you have fun. Love the design, quality, artwork. I have them sitting on my coffee table and book shelf. I have two sets of search and fill-it-ins. Love them.
A rewarding challenge
Very educational and brain massaging to recall known truths and be reminded. I like these, because I never do fill-in, so this is a rewarding challenge.
Easy on the eyes
This set is so beautiful. I love the large print making it easy on the eyes. I’m most inspired by the facts that are shared in the puzzles.
One in my bag at work
Really love them. I have one in my bag when I’m at work and have some downtime I work in them. When I’m home and tired of looking at TV all day I finish pages of the fill-in. LOVE them.
Both sets, the best yet
I purchased both sets (word search and the fill-in series) and they are the best sets yet. My 93-year-old mother loves the word search book and I just started the word puzzles. I will be purchasing more to use as gifts.
Excellent for my mature eyes
These are excellent for my mature eyes. I can’t wait to get started!
Sudoku? Crosswords?
This is an exquisite fill-in book. I am amazed at the quality and beauty of the piece and look forward to other puzzles in the future. Sudoku? Crosswords?
Got questions? I've got answers.

Is the African American Fill-In Puzzles book really large print?
Yes. The grids and the word lists are printed in large type on 8.5 × 11 inch pages, the same large print customers praise in my word search books. Reviewers call it “easy on the eyes” and “excellent for my mature eyes.” Scroll up to the sample pages to see the layout.
What exactly is inside the book?
100 themed fill-in puzzles, 2,000 words from African American life to place, a fact at the top of every puzzle, a few starter letters in every grid, and complete solutions at the back. 132 pages, glossy cover, black-and-white illustrated interior.
How hard are the puzzles? Is it good for seniors?
A step up from a word search, on purpose. There are no clues to decode: you get the word list sorted by letter count, a few starter letters, and an empty interlocking grid, and you work out where each word fits. Regular crossword and fill-in solvers call it relaxing, and a few even wish it were harder; customers new to fill-ins call it “a rewarding challenge.” It works for ages 13 and up and is popular with parents in their 70s and 80s. If you want the gentler version, the African American Word Search covers the same world in a classic word search grid.
Is this a good gift for my mom, grandmother or a friend?
It is the reason most people buy it. Mom is the most-mentioned recipient in reviews across the collection, followed by friends, sisters and daughters, and this is the one for the crossword lover who is not sure which title to start with. The glossy cover means it needs no wrapping, and with the Early Black Friday offer (buy 4, get 2 free) most gift buyers keep one for themselves.
Are the inside pages in colour?
The cover is full-colour gloss. The interior is black and white with illustrated borders on every page, which keeps the letters crisp and the price at $14.99. A few customers colour the borders in themselves.
Are all five fill-in books different?
Yes. Each book has its own 100 puzzles and its own 2,000 words. Black Women features only Black women and their achievements. Black Men features Black men. Black Culture covers food, music and traditions. Black History covers milestones and movements. African American takes the broadest view. No puzzle is repeated across books, and none of them repeats a word search book either.
How long does shipping take?
Orders ship from the U.S. and most arrive within 5 to 11 business days. You get a tracking number by email the moment it ships. Shipping is free on 3 or more books. Ordering for a birthday or Christmas? Order at least 10 days ahead to be safe.
What if my book arrives damaged or has a printing error?
I replace it free within 60 days, no return needed. Send a photo and your order number to info@imanioliver.com or through live chat and a new copy ships out. This covers books that are lost in transit, damaged, misprinted or the wrong title. Because each book is printed to order, all sales are final, but a replacement is always yours.
What is a fill-in puzzle, and how is it different from a word search?
A fill-in is a crossword without clues. Each puzzle gives you a themed list of words sorted by letter count and an empty interlocking grid with a few letters already filled in. You work out where each word fits using its length and the letters it shares with its neighbours. Every puzzle has one unique solution, and all of them are in the back of the book.
Is Imani Oliver a Black-owned business?
Yes. Imani Oliver™ is a Black-owned independent publisher. I research, design and publish every book myself, answer customer emails personally, and reply to reviews. When you buy from imanioliver.com you are supporting a small business, not a marketplace.
If it is not everything you expected, I replace it. Free. Within 60 days.
